YES! It is very important to trim split ends because if you don't the split damage can continue up the hair shaft and cause more length to break off. Now, we don't say you need to do this every X weeks, just keep an eye on your hair ends because everyone's hair care is unique. The best way to see split ends is in natural light. Sometimes you can actually see the split or often you will notice a tiny white dot near the ends of the hair shaft. This dot has a formal name: trichorrhexis nodsa or nodes! These nodes mark a spot in the hair shaft that is deeply damaged and going to eventually snap off or split. You can do yourself a favour and trim just above these nodes to prevent further spreading. These nodes are most often from heat damage - whether that be styling, blow drying, or even super hot shower water!
Consider having your ends trimmed, or cutting off split ends yourself with super sharp hair cutting shears (dull scissors can do more damage to your hair shafts!)
It is also very important to hydrate the shafts and ends of your hair with hair oil, and use a high quality conditioner and heat protectant before styling.
Some other factors that can contribute to hair damage: friction during sleeping, low/high air humidity, hard water (each city has unique tap water components), hair lightening, hair dying, twirling or playing with your hair, tight hairstyles, hair elastics, running with high pony tail, rough hair brushing, and low quality hair conditioner to name a few.
